Victoria Azarenka stormed to victory in the Bank of the West Classic on Sunday, defeating Maria Sharapova in the final
Eighth seed Azarenka was dominant throughout the final, and defeated Sharapova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to win her first WTA Tour title of the season. Azarenka turned twenty-one on Saturday, and is fast climbing the rankings. This success pushes her up to twelfth in the world.
Sharapova has also been in top form recently, and had won seventeen of her past twenty matches going into the final. She’s already won two titles this season, and sits in fifteenth in the rankings. After the match she light-heartedly vowed to avenge the defeat, and congratulated Azarenka for her victory.
Azarenka will now be focusing on the US Open, and could emerge as a challenger. She sits in eleventh in the RACE rankings and has won twenty-nine of her forty-two matches this season.
