Leinster have gotten their Heineken Cup campaign off to an unconvincing win victory over Exeter on Saturday.
The defending champions were expected to have way too much for the Chiefs, who were competing in their first ever European club clash, but it is arguably the visiting side who emerge from this match with the lion’s share of praise.
The men from England’s West Country did an excellent job of stifling the hosts’ attacking options, to the extent that each of Leinster’s points on the day came from the boot of Jonathan Sexton.
The performance from the Blues was a far cry from the dominant display they produced in last season’s Heineken Cup Grand Final, and boss Schmidt won’t be reaching for the champagne this evening, despite a victorious start to the team’s title defence.
Up next for Leinster is a trip to face Scarlets, and it was apparent from Saturday’s display that improvements are necessary if the champions are to maintain their grip on the most coveted of European club trophies.
Elsewhere in the Pool, Clermont’s comfortable victory over Scarlets means they top the group after the first round of matches, and, though Leinster won’t be hitting the panic button just yet, the French outfit’s dominant display in their own opener should provide food for thought.
The final matches from the opening round of the Heineken Cup take place tomorrow, with Northampton the hot 1/8 favourites to get their campaign off to a successful start against Glasgow.
Sale’s clash with the Cardiff Blues could be an interesting one, with the English side installed as marginal favourites at 8/11, with the Blues priced at 6/5
There will be a tasty encounter, too, in the South of France, where two heavyweights of European club rugby go head to head.
And it is Toulouse, at 1/3, who are expected to have too much firepower for Leicester, who are available at 5/2.
And finally, there’s an all-French tie at Toulon, who are widely expected to get off to a winning start when Montpellier visit.
The hosts are the 1/14 favourites to take the win, with Montpellier the big outsiders at 22/1.
Though Leinster have no direct concern in the results of these matches, there is likely to be much of interest on display, as the champions weigh up the merits of a selection of the teams who’ll fancy their chances of prising the Heineken Cup from their grasp.
