Ireland’s boxing hero Katie Taylor will fight for an Olympic Gold medal today against World number two Sofya Ochigava from Russia.
Taylor is now guaranteed at least a silver medal after recording a comfortable victory over Mavzuna Chorieva on Wednesday, winning every round of the semi-final in front of an ecstatic full house at London’s ExCel.
The lightweight final on will take place this afternoon at 4.45pm after the Russian fighter won 17-11 in her semi-final on Wednesday. Taylor is the overwhelming 1/12 favourite with Ladbrokes
to win Olympic gold with Ochigava priced at 6/1 to deny Ireland their first gold of the London 2012 Games.
Taylor, who won her fourth world title in May, took a 3-1 lead in round one, attacking from the start with little response from Chorieva before connecting with two strong punches and in the next round she looked in total control extending the lead to 13-6 going into the third round.
The 26-year-old Irish sporting superstar cruised the final round to record an overall 17-9 win over the Tajikistani ace and is thoroughly overjoyed at the prospect of Olympic glory today.
