Here is our preview of all eight races at Ascot on Friday with our tips in capital letters.
FIDDLERS BID could prove difficult to beat on his hurdling debut. Fergal O'Brien's exciting prospect was mightily impressive when bolting up in a bumper at this venue last month and the way he powered through the mud that day suggests stepping up three-quarters of a mile in trip here will pose no problems. Letsby Avenue looked all about stamina when fifth on his hurdling bow over 2m5f at Plumpton last month so the extra furlong today can only help him, while Wychwoods Brook and Lookout Mountain add further spice to the opener.
JUMPS ROAD gets the tentative vote in what looks a fairly open event. There was plenty to like about his chasing/seasonal debut performance at Ffos Las 40 days ago, only a short-head behind subsequent winner Mountainous, and there is every chance that he will improve for that first start since March. Mentalist warrants plenty of respect on the back of his workmanlike Ludlow success, while Be Definite is a proven soft ground performer and he should be in or around the money.
PUFFIN BILLY should prove a cut above these rivals. Held in the highest of regard by trainer Oliver Sherwood, the four-year-old has barely had to come off the bridle in each of his three starts thus far and it was impossible not to be impressed with the manner of his hurdling debut win at Newbury three weeks ago, where he took a keen hold throughout and still ran out a ready winner. His biggest danger looks to be Meganisi, who also won nicely at Newbury last time, while Up To Something should beat Bathcounty into third spot.
It's difficult to look past SIMONSIG as he makes his eagerly awaited chasing bow. The extremely talented grey rounded off last season with effortless novice hurdle victories at both the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals and, already installed as favourite for the Arkle Chase in March, it would be extremely disappointing were he to get turned over this afternoon. For forecast purposes, Act Of Kalanisi makes most appeal having finished just over eight lengths behind the exciting Captain Conan at Sandown last time, while Dare Me also has place credentials.
DUAISEOIR appeared to benefit from the application of blinkers (worn again today) when dotting up over 2m4f at Taunton recently and a 7lb penalty may not be enough to stop him if he can reproduce that level of performance this afternoon. Spanish Arch looks an obvious danger on the back of his 10-length Warwick success, while fellow last-time-out winner Farmer Matt cannot be ruled out lining up off bottom-weight.
Captain Cutter is a nicely bred son of Westerner and he commands respect on debut, while Tiqris is worthy of consideration on his first start since finishing runner-up in a Chepstow bumper some eight months ago, the form of which has been boosted with the fourth winning twice over hurdles since. The vote, however, goes to the race-fit KINGS PALACE. David Pipe's gelding was hugely impressive when making virtually all to win by 18-lengths first time up at Plumpton earlier this month and any improvement could see him double up.
