GAA President Christy Cooney has announced that the presentations for the GAA hurling and football finals are to take place on the pitch at Croke Park, despite numerous safety concerns.
Cooney said, “We’re going to make the presentation in the middle of the pitch. We’re going to have ourselves organised to make sure we have no pitch invasions. I’m very optimistic we will put everything in place to make sure that happens, but we can’t do that without the support of spectators. The last thing we want to do is put fencing up around Croke Park”.
It is hoped that the presentations will go smoothly, though there have been fears about staging them on the pitch. These fears concern the assault on referee Martin Sludden that occured during a pitch invasion at the end of the Leinster final. As Cooney revealed, the GAA will be taking steps to ensure that such incidents don’t happen again.
