Darren Clarke’s hopes of playing in the Ryder Cup have been boosted by an invite to the US PGA Championship
The forty-one year old is currently ranked twenty-first on the Ryder Cup points list, and is unlikely to make the cut for a guaranteed place as a player for the European team. Despite this, Clarke has a major opportunity to climb the list following a second consecutive invite to the US PGA Championship.
Clarke is already a part of the team, albeit as one of Colin Montgomerie’s assistants. Whilst Clarke is said to be ‘delighted’ with his role, he announced that he would appear in a playing capacity should he qualify for the team.
The Championship takes place at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. Clarke needs a good result in order to upset the likes of Edoardo Molinari, Alvaro Quiros, Luke Donald, Paul Casey and Ross McGowan to snatch a place in the team.
